Recommended for community tanks, Swordtails can add beautiful color to nearly any background. Naturally occuring from western Mexico south to Honduras, Green Swordtails were originally collected for the hobby from heavily vegetated slow-moving waters, generally rich in algae blooms. The many color variants available are the result of selective breeding programs and crosses between X. helleri and x. maculatus or X. variatus. Today, nearly all swordtail varieties are farm-raised with most of the fish available in the USA originating in Central Florida. Ideally kept in a planted aquarium with open swimming space, Swords make excellent tank mates for Corydoras, Gouramis, Barbs and Tetras.
