Most closely related to A. cirrhosus, the Common Bushynose rarely imported from the wild. Almost all of the specimens available today are farm-raised with nearly all of the fish available in the United States being bred here in the Tampa region. An effective choice for tank cleaning duties, they will do a good job keeping your aquariums relatively clear of algae films on glass, ornaments and most plants. Heavy algae growths and hair or beard algae will be ignored. Consider adding the Siamese Algae Eater to work with your new ancistrus if algae growths are severe or if beard algae is present.
Bushynose ancistrus are easy to breed in the home aquarium provided proper conditioning, clean water and adequately sized caves which are readily available in the market or easily constructed from slate. Feed them high quality algae wafers and zucchini to keep them in top condition. If not provided with supplemental foods and left to only survive on algae growths, these bold and curious fish will eventually seccumb to starvation.
